- We mostly work in groups with practical tasks that give room for bigger thoughts, create curiosity and build a sense of community.
- Most academic skills children will be taught in school. It`s still important that we give room for the children to become curious and get motivated.
- If the children shows interest in the alphabet and letters, we`ll of course encourage them to keep that interest. The most important thing for us is that the child should recognize the writing image of their name, and practice writing their name.
- In this context, it will be natural to talk about sounds so that the child gets first-hand experience of each letter having a corresponding letter sound.
- We arrange for the children to play and experiment with numbers, quantities, counting and get experiences expressing this in different ways.
- The children expand their mathematical understanding when they reflect on their experiences and put these in the context of what they already know.
- Other skills that are important to know before school starts, is proper pencil grip, cutting with scissors, and knowing something about themselves (last name, birthday, where they live, a little about their family ect).
Working on independency before the children starts school is important. This is our main focus.
• Open and close your own backpack, both with clip and cord. Pack back in the backapck after use.
• Find and open the lunch box, bottle and thermos.
• Tidying up after themselves after an activity
• Keep order in the locker room and know where to find their stuff. Practice hanging wet clothes in drying cabinets
• Dress and undress, and pull rubberbands over their shoes.
• Be a part of the assessment of how they need to dress according to the weather
• Be independent on the toilet. This means that in the last year of kindergarten, they have to practice wiping themselves and have good hygiene in bathroom situations.
• Washing hands
• making their own sandwiches (butter their bread and other «toppings»)
Having good social skills is a very important thing we must learn the children. Being a good friend and having friends around you is important to create security and well-being. Other social skills that are important in school include:
• Waiting your turn
• Be patient and share your attention
• Do not interrupt others
• Stand in line
• Keeping your arms and legs to themselves
• Raising your hand
• Sharing equipment and things
• Relate to both boys and girls
• Collaborate in groups
• Learn problem solving
• Be able to apologize, leave things behind
• Reflect on choices and situations that arise (Good and less good choices)
• Participate in toys/games. Be a "good" loser or winner.
• Be aware of what you can/should say to others
• Dare to speak up and assert yourself. To practice daring to speak up, speak your mind and take your place in the group.
